This extraordinary item was probably made to crush pepper corns. I have never seen anything like it - The pestle has somehow been carved into the bowl from a single piece of wood and can not be removed. The wood curves towards the central opening of the pestle so that grains fall into it automatically. I do not know the origin of this beautiful object although it is probably continental. It is 5 ½ inches high and 2 ½ inches in diameter.
